  • Residential solar installations contribute to the country’s renewable energy goals and help combat climate change. SEIA estimates that solar installations in 2022 alone will offset approximately 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetime (SEIA).

A note from our Founder:

The impact of solar homeownership in the United States is both significant and complex, offering substantial benefits like reduced utility bills, environmental gains, and increased property value. However, challenges remain that can affect homeowners' experiences.

As of Q4 2023, 4.2 million solar systems have been installed, while 84.7 million homes are eligible for solar—representing roughly 5% market penetration. Without addressing existing issues, consumer adoption may slow down. A major issue in the industry is the rise of "orphan systems." Many homeowners are left without support when their solar provider goes out of business. This has become increasingly common, with numerous solar companies closing their doors in recent years, leaving customers with no recourse for maintenance or support.

The complexity of solar transactions, from financing to installation, is compounded by the lack of mandatory regulations and educational requirements for sales professionals. This highlights the need for stronger consumer protection measures and more rigorous standards in the industry.

Despite these challenges, Wood Mackenzie projects that "the residential solar market will recover in 2025 and grow at an average annual rate of 10% between 2025-2028 as growth picks up in emerging markets." Although steady growth is forecasted, we cannot ignore the current challenges.
